Notes on March
Romanticising the season as we head into spring
For me, March is not just a celebration of a new season, but also a celebration of the women in my life.
Good afternoon, and Happy International Women’s Day!
Hasn’t March been glorious so far? The daffodils and bluebells are blooming, we are choosing to take the coffee shop’s outside seats, and at last the evenings are staying light for longer. I have Olivia Dean’s It Isn’t Perfect But It Might Be constantly stuck in my head, so I thought it could soundtrack this post.
(Has anyone seen the new Bridget Jones film yet? Is it good?)
For me, March is not just a celebration of a new season, but also a celebration of the women in my life. This of course kicks off with International Women’s Day, but March is also dedicated to my mum’s birthday, Mothering Sunday, and now I also celebrate my partner’s mum’s birthday in March. It is a female dominated month. A month for fresh flowers, hanging the washing outside, hot-crossed buns, daisy chains, dresses, shamrocks, and sunglasses.
Spring is in the air which means new beginnings and a fresh start. May I encourage you to take this week to review your goals and the systems you have put in place in order to achieve those goals.
Review your Goals this Month
In January I told myself I wanted to practice long distance running. This became ‘I will train myself to run 21 km by the end of 2025’ - giving myself a definite, numerical goal, and a deadline. By adding ‘because I want to improve my fitness’ gives the goal purpose. Just last week I signed up for the Brighton Half Marathon on March 1st 2026. This is now my incentive for achievement*. Every weekend I will increase the distance I run until I run 21 km.
Ask yourself,
Can I make my goals more specific?
What can I do today in order to help me feel closer to achieving this goal?
Why is this goal important to me?
What will be my reward when I achieve this goal?
Upon reviewing my goals, I have decided to shift the amount of caffeine I drink. In January, I decided to limit myself to one caffeinated tea or coffee a day. This was because I wanted to drink more water and herbal teas instead. However, I have decided that tea and coffee brings me too much joy to ration! Nothing is more delicious than sitting in a sunny coffee shop with a journal and flat white while spring knocks on the windows. Or waking up and sitting cosy in bed with a warm, milky brew and the sound of birdsong outside.
My February thoughts were dominated by (at times quite overwhelming) ideas of passion and purpose: what is important to me? What do I love? What can I do for other people? My intention for March is to prioritise enjoying time with friends and family; living in the moment a little bit more. I want to be a good friend, girlfriend, and daughter this month.
Surround Yourself by Cheerleaders
While you review your own goals, check in with the people closest to you and see what goals they are currently working on. International Women’s Day is the perfect excuse to do this. Offer your friends advice if they are lacking motivation and - arguably more importantly - cheer on their successes.
As humans, we can find it hard to brag. We carry a fear of sounding arrogant. So my dare to you is to BOAST. Tell your friends what you have done well so far this year. Tell them what healthy habits you have successfully implemented into your every day life. Tell them what you are proud of. Give yourself a compliment. Once you show your friends that it is okay to brag and boast, they will feel safe to celebrate their wins too.
Once you and your friends/relatives have reviewed your goals together, decide to kick-start spring with a new hobby that will help you feel closer to your goals. Suggest going for a walk with your mum if she wants to increase her daily steps; go pottery-painting with your grandma if she wants to tune back into creativity; have a brunch date at home with your best-friend who is trying to save money. When you become a cheerleader to those closest to you, they will cheer for you back. Goals are much easier to achieve when you can share the fun of growing into the best version of yourselves!
What I am bragging about this week:
I have been waking up at 6 am every morning, and let me tell you, the sunrises are so worth waking up for.
My lovely friend said I inspired her to sign up for a Race for Life event!
I am proud of the successful meetings I had at work this week.

Embrace the Season
Finally, as we close the first week of March and get a taste of spring, I encourage you to fully embrace the season. Cauliflower, rhubarb, and leeks should take a proud place on your dinner plates. Remember to pause and feel the sun on your skin, or watch the rain peacefully (because there will be rain too). Take a walk without your headphones and listen to the birds; feel the bitterness in the breeze.
For International Women’s Day, write yourself a love letter.
On St. Patrick’s Day, think about what makes you feel lucky. Discover some Irish music.
This Mothering Sunday, buy flowers for the mother figure in your life. Buy yourself a bunch too.
Treat yourself to a spot of spring cleaning, research a poem about the beauty of March, and - on the day where we are celebrating women - remember to celebrate yourself and what you have achieved so far this year.

What a beautiful and inspiring post.
